Michael Novice was born in Warsaw in 1927, and experienced the normal existence of a Jewish boy in prewar Poland. With the rise of the Third Reich, however, his life was transformed. He lived in the Warsaw Ghetto from 1939 to 1941, and later went on to become a fugitive, a slave laborer, and a concentration camp inmate.
After surviving the Holocaust, he moved to England and then to the United States. He became a physicist and spent his career in industry, in addition to marrying and raising three children. Now a grandfather and great-grandfather, Michael Novice is sometimes asked by people who have seen movies about the Holocaust, “Was it really like that?” He always replies: “No. It was worse.”
