pushkeAs you know, the mitzvah of donating Matanot L'evyonim (charity for the poor) is an important and wonderful part of the Purim celebration.   In past years, The Adams Street Synagogue has helped us fulfill this mitzvah by collecting donations from you, the congregation, and giving those donations to Yad Chessed (http://www.yadchessed.org), an organization committed to helping Jews in need in the Boston/Newton community.

This year, we have the opportunity (perhaps responsibility would be a better word) to do a little better. Our Vice-President and dear member, Eyal Cohen, has alerted us to a very severe situation in Israel where a father of four is finding himself in a desperate situation. Those of you who know Eyal are aware of how serious and trustworthy he his. His call for help for this person/family is good enough for me. I, therefore, appeal to one and all to do somewhat better than usual so that our appeal this year will make a real difference.

With this year's Matanot L-evyonim, we intend to support both worthy causes: Yad Chessed and Eyal's family member. In doing so, Adams Street SHul can make a difference to the lives of Jewish people in need in the Boston/Newton community, as well as to the lives of Jews in Israel who have a direct connection to one of our congregation members. As such, we plan to divide the incoming charity between both worthy causes equally.

Although times are tough economically, I hope that all of us in the community can reach deep and give more for this year's Matanot L-evyonim -- not only in the spirit and intent of Purim, but in the spirit of our community.

You can send your donations to Adams Street Synagogue, Attn: Matanot L-evyonim. If you wish to provide additional help for Eyal's family member, please contact Eyal directly ().

Yasher Koach and a Chag Purim Sameach .... Rabbi Weinberg
